Amalgam is a combination of metals chemically bonded by mercury, a toxic element that can enter the environment through wastewater, vapors or scrap. Because of that, dental amalgam should always be managed by amalgam removal specialists. It should never be disposed of in the garbage, a sharps container or down the drain.
The Environmental Protection Agency issued a federal regulation on July 14, 2017, requiring dental offices to install amalgam separators by July 14, 2020. These devices can increase the capture of dental amalgam waste from 80% to 95%.
